Become A Tutor to Earn Extra Income

Updated on February 2, 2014

Become A Tutor – Do you have what it takes?

If you want to make some extra income and have a particular area of expertise, you can become a tutor and work from home. Are you able to communicate easily with students from Elementary to Post Secondary levels? If so, you have the ability to make money over the internet by tutoring others in what you know.

What you need to Become A Tutor at home:

  • Access to the internet
  • A particular skill or a level of expertise.
  • The ability to remain patient while passing on information to others.
  • It would be nice if you had a webcam to be able to tutor people, but not a must have.
  • As long as you have the internet and are able to send messages or emails and make free calls with Skype, you’ll do alright in your communications.

How do you find work?

The way that you make money in tutoring is when people are paying you to tutor them. The most important thing you need to do is establish with customers is why they should hire you as opposed to someone else. Even though this seems easy, it can be more complicated than most people think to become a tutor with a good client list.

Say that you’re fluent in French – you decide that you’d like to tutor others in French in exchange for an hourly fee. All right, great, what sets you apart from everyone else who speaks French fluently? This same reasoning works for every skill that you have and want to become a tutor in. Find the reasons why you are the perfect person to tutor them, let your customers know those reasons. Learning to market yourself is your primary goal.

You may seriously want to consider specializing in a certain area, Math is a very common area for Tutoring, as is English. But, you are not limited with tutoring. If you're a Webmaster, you may be able to find quite a few people that would like some lessons on how to build their own websites. If you're an SEO specialist, you can surely find already existing web developers that need tips on how to correctly perform their SEO work. The sky is the limit with the tutoring skills that you can offer.

HTML Tutoring

I am including a link to HTML tutorials, to show you that there is a wide audience that you can appeal to when you become a tutor. You can create tutorial videos and sell/market them to interested parties.

Create video tutorials and post them to YouTube (or any other Video Hosting Site) - This can be considered a traffic source and a great way of advertising your skills. I would recommend having a website and posting links to your videos so that potential customers can see your skills in action.

Found A Niche you want to become a Tutor in – Now what?

Once you’ve established why people should use your tutoring service as opposed to others, you need to find people to tutor. There are a few great ways to get your name out there and find people who could use your services.

Create a Blog / Website: A professional looking website may be great in theory, but it does cost money if you don’t do it yourself. Writing in a free blog will generate exposure for you. A blog gives you the chance to demonstrate your expertise. You can show people that you know a great deal about the subject that you’ve chosen to become a tutor in. This means that if you are tutoring in math, you would write articles directly related to the math you specialize in.

Look for Tutoring Partnership Websites: Oftentimes there are larger websites that offer these services and you can apply there. Work may be sporadic, but it is a great way to get your name known.

Look for Freelancing Websites: You can go on professional websites or sites like Craigslist. Places like Craigslist can be a great way to advertise your services. It can be difficult not knowing how much money you are going to make on a weekly basis; but you can become a tutor and grow more successful at it over time. Remember that repeat customers and word-of-mouth helps you out in your business, treat all clients with the greatest respect and you’ll go far.
